If you plan to travel internationally, you will need to get tested no more than 3 days before you travel by air into the United States (US) and show your negative result to the airline before you board your flight, or be prepared to show documentation of recovery (proof of a recent positive viral test and a letter from your healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel).

What you’ll usually need for travel is a PCR test (polymerase chain reaction). These are the most reliable tests for detecting active COVID-19 infections and are considered the “gold standard” of testing.

The tests that often won’t help you with travel are antibody tests, blood tests that can identify if a previous COVID-19 infection caused your immune system to produce COVID-19 antibodies. Some countries also won’t accept rapid antigen tests, which check for proteins on the virus’s surface. These tests are popular for their quick turnaround times but are less accurate than PCR tests.

If your child has any ONE of the following symptoms, they should get a COVID-19 test:
  • fever or chills (temp of 37.8 or greater)
  • cough (more than usual)
  • difficulty breathing
  • decrease or loss of smell or taste
  • runny nose or stuffy nose
  • sore throat or difficulty swallowing
  • nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • headache
  • unusual or extreme tiredness or muscle aches

If your child has one or more symptoms, keep your child at home and book a test at a COVID-19 Assessment Centre or contact your health-care provider. Without testing, the child must stay home for 10 days.
